The Madison
County Volley Raiders opened region play at Lanier on Tuesday night. The varsity
Raiders and Longhorns battled through three sets before Lanier squeaked out with
the 2-1 win. Madison County took the opening set by a 25-23 score and Lanier
pushed past the Raiders in the second set 25-13 to force a third and deciding
set. Lanier used a run of 9-0 to earn the early 13-4 lead, but Madison County
answered by pulling to within three points following strong serves by Mackenzie
LaZear and key blocked shots by Mya Moss. Jessica Hill was the recipient of
back to back point serves late and LaZear added a spike that ended up tying the
game at 22-22. Lanier then pulled away with three unanswered points to win the
set 25-22 and overall match.
The varsity
Volley Raiders then swept Berkmar in the nightcap 2-0 (25-12, 29-27). The
junior varsity Raiders suffered a loss to Lanier 0-2 (16-25, 12-25).
